I’m Christine Hubbell, a native-born Hoosier working primarily in colored pencil. I earned a foundational certificate in botanical and scientific illustration from the Denver Botanic Gardens. My illustrations focus on how humans make meaning out of the elements of the natural world, particularly through our love affair with birds and flowers. You might see a bit of whimsy or commentary in my work as I play with situating my subjects over, under and around man-made elements.
When I’m not in the field studying the rich biodiversity of our local flora and fauna, I’m bringing plants and reference photos into the studio. Working in colored pencil on drafting film allows me to illustrate with rich color and realistic detail. I build each piece layer by layer until the story emerges.
My work has traveled nationally as part of juried exhibitions. I was selected for the 2023 Hoosier Women Artists Exhibition and was a 2024 Artist in Residence at the Indiana Dunes National Park. I’m a conservation volunteer, aspiring naturalist and art teacher. I hope my work will inspire delight in birds and native plants.
